Biografía:
Bautizado como Michael Derek Elworthy Jarman, fuer artista plástico, escenógrafo, escritor y director de cine desde los años 60 hasta su muerte. Nació en enero de 1942 en Northwood, Inglaterra, y desde 1960 estudió en el King’s College London y luego cuatro años mas en la Salde School of Art. Tenía su estudio en Butler’s Wharf, Londres, y fue parte de la escena de Andrew Logan en los años 70. A principios de esta década, Derek adquirió una cámara de cine de 8mm. Con la que empezó a realizar cortometrajes en compañía de sus amigos.
Además, Derek es reconocido por haber dirigido videoclips musicales para grupos como The Smiths, Suede o Pet Shop Boys. En 1986 alcanzó su cima mediática con la peculiar biografía del pintor italiano, Caravaggio.
En diciembre de ese mismo año le fue diagnosticado el virus VIH, y la enfermedad le llevó a mudarse a Prospect Cottage. Murió de SIDA en 1994.

Biography:
Michael Derek Elworthy Jarman was a plastic artist, scenographer, writer and cinema director from the 60s until his death. He was born in October of 1942 in Northwood, United Kingdom, and since 1960 he studied in King’s College London and then four years in the Salde School of Art. He had a studio in Butler’s Wharf, in London and participates in Andrew Logan's scene in the 70s. At the beginning of that decade Derek get a 8mm cinema camera and he began to direct short films with his friends.
Besides Derek is known for directing music videos for groups like The Smiths, Suede or Pet Shop Boys. He reached his media top in 1986 with the Italian painter Caravaggio's peculiar biography.
He was diagnosed with HIV virus in December of the same year and moved to Prospect Cottage because of the disease. He died of AIDS in 1994.
